Did you know that shutting up when the police come to your door can help you beat criminal charges? In some cases, it can even keep those charges from issuing.

We’ve done many videos and articles about how to interact with the police. We tell people to never answer questions, always invoke your rights and always ask for a criminal defense lawyer in Woburn, Massachusetts.

Follow Some Simple Advice

I’m excited to tell you about a client who followed our advice and kept some very serious charges from issuing. Our client Vince was a young kid who was being investigated for making online threats. The police had a cyber expert trace the threats back to a computer coming from Vince’s house. But they couldn’t quite pin it down to Vince or his computer. Based on the person who was receiving the threats, they believed it was Vince. But they just didn’t have enough evidence to charge him.

To get the evidence, the police sent two detectives to his house. They were hoping to get some more information and maybe even a confession from Vince. Vince answered the door. He’s a young kid. The detectives ask him to step outside and answer some questions. He doesn’t know why they’re at his house. He doesn’t know what to do. He’s afraid. He does what the detectives ask. He steps outside and they start to question him.

Just Say “No”

Luckily, his older brother had seen some of our videos and knew exactly what to do. He went outside and pulled Vince aside. He said, “I don’t think you should talk to the police. You should call a lawyer and tell the police that.” Vince took his brother’s advice, told the police, “I don’t want to answer any more questions. I really think I should talk to a lawyer.” Under the law, once the police hear those words, they must to stop all questioning. The magic words can be either “no I don’t want to talk” or “I want a criminal defense lawyer.” Both will require the police to stop questioning. That’s exactly what happened in this case!

Without more information, the police did not have enough information to charge Vince. That means Vince was never arrested and didn’t have to go to court. He escaped this by following our advice, saying no, asking for lawyer, invoking his rights. This is truly a success story for what we are telling you. I’m really excited that someone’s watching out there and someone’s following our advice. It really does work for the little guy, not just lawyers or other people, it works for everybody.

If you follow this advice, hopefully you can keep yourself from ever being charged. Or if you are charged, have a much better case.
